Restaurant Rütlihaus
6441 Seelisberg, Switzerland, Rütli
This is the location of The Schwurplatz (“oath site”) on Lake Lucerne refers to the Rütli meadow (Rütliwiese), a historic clearing on the lake’s shore, near Seelisberg. According to Swiss tradition and legend: In 1291, representatives of the three founding cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden met there. They swore the Rütlischwur (“Rütli Oath”), pledging mutual support and defense against outside domination, especially Habsburg rule. This oath is seen as the founding moment of the Swiss Confederation. Today: The Rütli is a national memorial site, owned by the Swiss Confederation and protected by the Swiss Federal Charter Association (Schweizerische Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft). Each 1st of August (Swiss National Day), official celebrations are held there. You can reach it by boat from Lucerne, Brunnen, or Flüelen, then a short uphill walk. So the Schwurplatz is not a building, but a symbolic meadow on Lake Lucerne, deeply tied to Swiss national identity.
I loved this place! I got a seat on the front terrace, with a breathtaking lake view. I asked for a traditional bier and I got a locally produced Grütli bier, which was excellent. Then I asked for meatballs with mashed potatoes. That was tasty. The staff is purely friendly and the waiting time is not long at all. I strongly recommend this restaurant to all my friends and relatives.
A wonderful traditional Swiss experience. We took a boat ride from Lucerne and disembarked at Rutli for lunch here. It was a Swiss highlight for us on many levels. The history of Rutli as the spot where Switzerland was originally established in 1291 was great. The Rutlihaus restaurant, located a 10 minute walk on an uphill trail from the Rutli boat dock, honors this historic event. The barley cream soup was truly fantastic as were the views of Lake Lucerne. Service provided by Mark, was perfect. Their carrot cake was unique, almost like a dense cheesecake with carrotcake spices. Overall, we loved the 2 hours that we spent in Rutli. Seeing their beautiful hairy cows, just like those in Scotland, was a pleasant surprise too. Highly recommended!
We visited after a boat ride from Brunnen to Rütli. The place is well located and the menu is nicely made, there is even a good selection of vegetarian options. We only have had time for cake though as the ferry only comes once an hour. The carrot (Rüebli) cake was kind of disappointing and tasteless but the apple cake was even worse, not a lot of apple flavor and very mushy. Both cost 10.50 each which is on the expensive side. Maybe other menu items are OK but our particular experience was disappointing. The view and overall location are great though so stopping here and getting a bottled beer and/or coffee is something which I would still recommend.
Overpriced, for what you get and with a very limited choice of what you can eat. The view is nice but not much more than that.
The chicken nuggets and fries were awesome
