Our reason for visiting was the castle's part in the persecution of Anabaptists. 2025 is the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Anabaptist movement in Zürich. From the standpoint of the authorities the movement's belief in a pacifist free church not connected to the state was intolerable. Persecution started immediately and continued until the final expulsion of Anabaptists in 1771. There are good displays and materials to help tell the story. English translations are available, and thanks to available free Wi-Fi you can use the camera in Google Translate to read Eben in any language.
Very small type of museum. Mostly information panels and some audio playing in places. You’ll learn quite a bit about anabaptist history and get a good impression of a prison cell after the reformation. Good views from the top of the keep as well.
Interesting and challenging display of how Anabaptists paid for their faith with persecution and their lives. It demonstrates the value and importance of the gospel.
Very well preserved part of history
This is where anabaptist martyrs were imprisoned. The displays are fascinating. Did you know the prisoners were made to work to generate money for the castle owners?
Very interesting because there are cells in upper floors where Anabaptist believers were held for their beliefs after the Reformation. It's a free self guided tour. Plans are to make improvements so more of the castle can be accessible to the public. Very scenic views through windows of upper floors.
