Beautiful and usual train stop, you can come from bottom (actually closed) or pass Furkapass with a steam train! (There is diesel train too).
A real hidden gem deep in the Swiss Alps. A beautiful, genuine 2 hour train journey through remote mountains from Realp to Oberwald. Took the first class option (more comfy seats with a glass of wine/drink on offer). The trip was mesmerising and at times even emotional. Not only that, I also learned a lot about the geology and history about the area. The staff (onboard and also at the stations) were impeccable. They were all volunteers but you can see their real passion for the heritage railway. Special shoutout to Kurt Pfander who explained (in English) the trip, the geography and whenever the train unexpectedly stopped, and took care of the first class carriage. Possibly the most underrated experience one can do in Switzerland, I cannot recommend it enough.
Fantastic steam railway up to the Furka pass at over 2 000 m and down on the other side. Even if the weather might be bad at the pass the journey is spectacular. The 100 years old steam engine looks as if it were brand new - the volunteers and enthusiasts do a brilliant job in preserving and developing this unique line. Very different from the nearby luxury Glacier Express train but just as great experience. Good connections to the ordinary MGB railway line.
We had an enjoyable day travelling here and riding on the train. If you are looking for preserved steam and lovely countryside then you will be very happy to come here.
