Fascinating tour; I was allowed to drive into the tunnel near Mitholz in the tour bus. Very interesting and impressive.
Good and interesting tour through the Base Tunnel
We booked a guided tour of the Lötschberg Tunnel (Mitholz) for a youth group. The tour was absolutely spectacular. We never dreamed we'd find such a detailed exhibition so deep inside the mountain. Visiting the test section was like "ground zero" for us, where the engineers laid the foundations for the tunnel's construction. The exhibits are crafted with an impressive amount of care and attention to detail – from individually stripped cables down to the thinnest fiber optic strands, to sleeper shoes in all their possible conditions, right down to the wheel rims. It creates the impression of a "tubular tunnel you can touch" – you can weigh a tunnel boring machine's chisel to get a sense of its weight, feel it and experience the wear and tear firsthand, knead the padding inside the sleeper shoe between your fingers, smell the rust on the construction rails, and weigh a section of contact wire in your hand. From the raw concrete to the reinforcement and the concrete lining, the tunnel wall can be studied in detail at every stage of its construction. The most outstanding highlight is undoubtedly the window, which is superbly crafted. The fact that it juts into the tunnel and even extends beyond the wall above allows you to stand in the gap and feel completely immersed in the tunnel as the train roars past at 200 km/h – an incredible and surreal experience. The guided tour and exhibition offer a literally up-close encounter with this endlessly fascinating, century-old structure. Our guide, Heinz Maibach, gave us one of the best tours I have ever experienced. His explanations were consistently precise, engaging, and easy to understand. He quickly captivated our group, prompting a flurry of questions from our many technically minded members. It soon became clear that Heinz possesses comprehensive knowledge in all areas, even those far beyond the scope of the tour. Whether it was about the tunnel, the rolling stock, construction methods, the rock formations, the surrounding area, operational procedures, political decisions, or any other topic related to Switzerland's railways, Heinz possessed a vast wealth of knowledge in all areas and patiently shared it in his engaging manner. With him, the already excellent exhibition became a wonderland, a veritable paradise for the inquisitive. Not only did Heinz answer every question in detail, but he also went far beyond the planned scope of the tour to satisfy our insatiable curiosity. At our request to see the ventilation system, he spontaneously arranged it – the enormous turbine proved to be another highlight. We enjoyed the Lötschberg experience so much that we ended up going two hours over the allotted time, which we only realized afterward – Heinz generously took the extra time and gave it to us without batting an eye – a tremendous gesture of goodwill for which we are very grateful. Heinz not only took the extra time but also generously gave it to us without batting an eye – a truly remarkable gesture for which we are deeply grateful. Heinz provided an outstanding tour and gave us an incredible experience that we will remember for the rest of our lives.
