The restaurant at Central Hotel Wolter in Grindelwald offers a thoroughly enjoyable alpine dining experience, combining comforting Swiss cooking with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Set within the hotel, the space has a cosy, traditional feel, with an attractive terrace that’s especially appealing on sunny days after time spent exploring the mountains. The menu focuses on classic Swiss and European dishes, done well and without unnecessary fuss. Expect hearty, well-cooked plates such as rösti, grilled meats, burgers, seasonal soups and regional specialities, alongside a good selection of desserts and a thoughtfully chosen wine list. The food is consistently satisfying and well flavoured, striking a nice balance between traditional and accessible, with vegetarian options also available. Service is another strong point. Staff are generally friendly, attentive and efficient, helping to create a relaxed, easygoing atmosphere that suits both casual lunches and more leisurely dinners. While it can get busy at peak times, the overall experience remains smooth and welcoming. Prices sit in the mid-range for Grindelwald, which feels fair given the quality of the food, the portions and the setting. It’s not trying to be fine dining, but it doesn’t need to be: Central Hotel Wolter’s restaurant succeeds by doing the classics well in a charming alpine environment. All in all, it’s a reliable and enjoyable choice for anyone looking for good, honest food in a pleasant setting—particularly if you want a comfortable place to unwind and eat well after a day in the mountains.
Good location 3mins to station, 5mins to supermarket & shops. Old style hotel ?, rooms cllean& tidy, friendly staff, only the room is too warm, needs to open the window at night otherwise cannot sleep
We would highly recommend this hotel!!! When we arrived to Grindelwald by train, it was less than one minute walk to it. (about 30 seconds!) It is also opposite the area where there is many buses to the different ski areas and other little towns outside of Grindelwald. There is a ski hire shop just a couple of doors down from it. All the hotel staff we met were very nice, very friendly and helpful! The Hotel and bedrooms are very cosy and clean. They have a lovely restaurant downstairs. We enjoyed a lovely breakfast each morning! We would highly recommend staying in this hotel! There is also a very nice supermarket near it, just about 2 minutes walk from it. We have highly enjoyed each time we have stayed there. It is very welcoming and homely! We just feel so at home there! ❤️
This comfortable hotel has a great location in the village. The single room had a spectacular view of the Eiger and was ideal for a week of skiing. You have the option of taking the short bus ride to the lifts or take the train to the heart …
Definitely the best value hotel in Grindelwald. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The breakfast is great and the hotel is extremely well located very close to the train station and bus station. When we checked out we rebooked again for next year. We’ve been to Grindelwald 10 times for both winter and summer holidays and have stayed in various hotels and the Central Wolter is our favourite. It’s the best all round in our opinion.
We went to Central Hotel Wolter restaurant for dinner. We ordered salad, pasta, fish, and steak. We expected the salad first, then pasta, and then the main dishes — this is standard practice. However, the male waiters brought all four dishes at once, seemed confused themselves, left, and then returned. Most of the food was cold except the pasta, and the salad that came with the fish was just a duplicate of the salad we already ordered. When I asked to speak to a manager, an older lady eventually came, but the young manager who then approached us was rude and dismissive. She claimed that “tour groups want all their food at once” and that we hadn’t requested the order to be served in sequence — ignoring that we are not a tour group, just two individuals. It felt like she was trying to put the blame on us instead of acknowledging their service failure. Overall, the experience was frustrating, the service was poor, and the way our complaint was handled was unacceptable. We were only charged for the pasta and steak because of the mistakes. I would not recommend this restaurant.
